Lonesome Lake. Lonesome Lake Hut is the second lowest hut in the system. It started out in 1876 as a fishing camp on Lonesome Lake, with cabins built by author W.C. Prime. The hut officially became part of the AMC system in 1929, when the State of New Hampshire bought the land and invited the club to run it as a shelter.
Probably the highlight of the whole hike. Next leg of the hike was down Fishin’ Jimmy’s trail to the Lonesome Lake hut. First half of this trail was also a bit more technical and challenging, with some wooden steps and carved out footholds in the stones to help you get down some of the trickier bits. Lonesome lake hut was quite nice. Trail up to Lonesome Lake is very packed (though spikes are still useful); the upper parts of Fishin’ Jimmy are pretty icy and required some careful maneuvering in 4-5 spots. Phone died so the trail time is a bit off—it took us about five hours not including a long stop at the hut for late lunch on the way back. The hut was a unique bonus at Lonesome Lake. We came down Lonesome Lake trail and connected to Pemi trail that paralleled the river/highway for two nearly flat miles back to the Basin parking area, making a nice loop. From the junction of the Dodge Cut-Off, the Lonesome Lake Trail, and the Cascade Brook Trail, we followed the Lonesome Lake Trail around Lonesome Lake in a counterclockwise fashion before arriving at the Lonesome Lake Hut managed by the AMC. The hut has drinking water and restrooms, along with some baked goods available for purchase.
