The water at Purple Beach, part of the Pacific Ocean, tends to be cold throughout the year. During the day in summers the water is a good temperature to cool off. The water is also much cleaner than near the big cities of LA and San Diego. Jade Cove. Named after the smooth, waxy stone frequently found on its rocky beaches after a storm, Jade Cove lies 27 miles south of the main settlement in Big Sur, two miles south of Sand Dollar Beach, and just over three miles north of Gorda.
